1795 $10 Gold 13 Leaves PCGS AU58
This early US Mint design truly evokes a feeling of liberty and freedom when you look at it. Liberty faces right in a turban cap, with a strong LIBERTY and stars around the design on the obverse. On the reverse, we have the pleasure of having an eagle with outstretched wings and a fully struck set of feathers. Also, the eagle has claws clasping a palm branch and holding in its beak a wreath. The ‘United States Of America’ legend loops around the reverse, and the eagle’s wings make contact with the legend, as if this country encompasses what the beautiful reverse symbolizes. This design is what our founding fathers saw as a representation of America.
As the BD-1 variety, this coin has the pleasure of being the first $10 Eagle variety struck. In terms of strike, the early gold seems to have avoided most early US mint fallacies that plagues lesser denominations. There is a strong strike, with full dentils all around, a few extremely light adjustment marks on the obverse dentils from 2 to 4 o’clock. This Capped Bust Right $10 has stood the test of time and is visually appealing to the astute collector. Hints of butterscotch peek through fields of honey-gold, to add to the warm gold surfaces throughout. There are a few handling marks in the left obverse field, and under the leaves on the reverse at 6 o’clock.
Courtesy of Robert Scot, these $10 eagles were minted from 1795 to 1797 with the small eagle reverse, and per John Dannruther, it is estimated that anywhere from 10,609 to 18,676 examples were struck. Fun fact: until 1804, the composition of these gold eagles was .9167 gold and .0833 silver/copper. Thomas Jefferson halted production of this denomination in that same year. When $10 gold coins returned to US mint production in 1838, it was your standard 90% gold and 10% copper composition.
This example will fit nicely with other early US Gold issues, whether you are collecting by type or variety. As one of our favorite coins we have offered here at Peak Rarities, we know you will absolutely enjoy this coin.
