1799/8 Draped Bust Dollar 15 Reverse Stars PCGS XF40
In terms of engraver’s mistakes, this early Draped Bust Dollar is a fantastic example of the pains of the U.S. Mint in its infancy. Firstly, the die prepared for 1798 dollars was used to strike 1799 dollars, and you can clearly see an ‘8’ under the second 9 in the date. Secondly, the engraver working on the reverse die made a mistake, accidentally adding 2 extra stars to the reverse, and then attempted to cover them up with clouds. You can see the edges of the stars, and it is quite a cool example of the type.
Pleasing gray surfaces throughout the coin make for a solid coin. Light yellow toning in the periphery, especially on the reverse, adds to the eye appeal. This coin exhibits a strong strike, with full dentils on both sides. Marks are relatively limited, except for a few minute hits on the bust. These early dollars are tough to find without major problems, and this one has survived the last 225 years facing up quite nicely.
