1836 $5 Classic Head CACG AU-58
Many will say that that classic heads are undervalued and underappreciated, while others say they're ugly and that's the reason that they're underappreciated. For such an early series with narrow run of dates, we fall into the former category.
This coin has razor sharp detail and a natural yellow hue, minor scattered ticks are present but only under magnification. Leaps and bounds nicer than many other coins at this grade level, this classic head would fit nicely into a type set or an advanced date run. Comparatively to most other 58s, this one has a lot less actual wear and the fields are generally undisturbed. We think that it might have made it into a 61 holder under the right circumstances, but the 58 grade assigned by CACG is appropriate and accurate.
The last two PCGS / CAC examples sold on Stacks in 2022. One was a Fairmont coin with several notable distractions and the other looks a bit more similar to this one. We have not the slightest clue as to why the CAC retail is stuck at a measly $3600, but even the more common 1834 Plain 4 Variety has had two recent comps in PCGS/CAC 58 at $4560 and $6462, the latter being the Haynor plate coin for HM-1 on Legend.
