1839 $5 Liberty Head NGC AU55
The 1839 $5 Liberty Head is the first year of the type, and has a few notable differences from the 1840 and later issues. It's almost like a single year type, and many consider this Gobrecht design to be superior to the design of later years. While not particularly scarce, in AU and above this coin becomes a rarity, and many examples are quite unappealing.
This NGC AU55 comes with provenance from the Long Island Collection, which was an advanced collection of original gold. We recently placed an 1800 $5 from the same collection, and that coin was absolutely perfect for the grade, dripping with originality. Pleasing, even surfaces and luster on the high points oozes eye appeal, as the design shows it off well. The coin has no distractions to be found, and the honey tone provides ample eye appeal for those interested in a first year $5 Liberty at a price where you don't have to think twice.
