1854-O $10 Liberty Large Date NGC XF40 Gold CAC
A fun fact about this coin is that the date punch used on these coins was originally intended for silver dollars, but it was subsequently used for both the $10 and $20 Gold pieces. This scarce southern gold example has quite a bit to offer, and we could not see it grading any less than AU-50 by modern standards. A peach-orange patina radiates from the peripheries, and the luster is outstanding for an "XF-40" 😉. The surfaces are delightfully attractive with no deep contact marks, and some inconspicuous grease marks on the reverse just accentuate the character of a coin that surely has some stories to tell.
Though there arent any recent APRs of this issue in XF45 CAC, but recently an AU50 CAC (admittedly, a nicer coin) sold for $5,280 this past June in the Albertine Fairmont set on Stacks. Interestingly enough, the more common small-date variety has a recent APR of $4,080 in PCGS 45 CAC this past March, in the Mont Blanc Fairmont Auction. Picking up on APR nuances like that indicates to us that this example is a fabulous value, a price at which it will not last very long.
CAC has approved just 42 coins in all grades, and only 2 have Gold CAC stickers.
