1863-S $20 PCGS AU53 CAC
The history of the 1863-S Double Eagle is fascinating. Before the discovery of the S.S. Brother Jonathan and S.S. Republic shipwrecks, this date was one of the rarest Civil War Era Double Eagles. With these discoveries, 289 1863-S examples were discovered in grades ranging from EF-UNC, making this one of the more common dates.
As a non-shipwreck example, most coins were known to have deep marks and abrasions from circulation in the Wild West as well as transportation across the harsh trails of the United States. This example has gently abraded fields, but nothing that rises to the level of distracting. This issue exhibits some typical strike weakness, however, the overall appearance leaves little to be desired with the honey-gold patina and traces of fresh luster in the protected areas.
