1921 Peace Dollar High Relief NGC PF62 Satin
The 1921 Satin Proof Peace Dollar first surfaced at the 1975 ANA convention, and today there are approximately 15-20 known. These were struck from specially prepared dies on the US Mint's medal press in order to be presented to government officials, as well as those who assisted in preparation of the Peace design. These were minted in the dwindling days of 1921, and were not made available to collectors, thus the knowledge regarding these coins was relatively unknown until one eventually came to light. Circulation strikes were also minted with these same dies, however the sharp rims and surfaces are identifiers of a proof coin.
The satiny luster just pops on this coin, the razor-sharp strike showcases details of the Peace Dollar that you would normally not see on a circulation strike 1921. A light pewter tone throughout is accented by the high relief and strike, with a hint of russet on the reverse further enhancing the eye appeal. The surfaces are clean of hits, sans some wispy hairlines, and a strikethrough in the left obverse field which serves as an identifying marker.
To give an idea of APR's, the most recent NGC 62 sold in 2020 for $28,000. Our example has a stronger strike, and has more visual appeal than the other example. While there aren't any other recent comps in 62, an NGC 63 sold in 01/23 for $48,000 on HA, and the eye appeal is fairly similar. These Satin Proofs have held their value fairly well over time, and there is no shortage of demand from collectors.
